Holiday Granola: Homemade with LOVE

Those who know me well know that I'm obsessed with Granola cereal. And not only that, I am a total snob when it comes to eating this nutrient dense treat. I have combed the globe high and low tasting various types of granola. Some of the best I have tried come from Brazil and two of my states side faves include Michelle's granola and an artisinal variety from a bed an Breakfast out in La Jolla, California. Anyway, without further ado, here is my homemade granola recipe. I make it during the holidays to give as presents to acquaintances and people look forward to it all year. I also use it to top my oatmeal and vegan french toast. Recipes for that later!

Latham's Homemade Granola

3 1/2 cups rolled oats
1/2 cup coconut flakes, unsweeteend
3 tablespoons flax seeds
3 tablespoons sesame seeds
1/4 cup sunflower seeds
1/2 cup pumpkin seeds
1/2 cup toasted mixed nuts, chopped (I used almonds & hazelnuts here)
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon sea salt
1/4 cup sucanat
1/4 cup grapeseed oil
2 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon pure maple syrup
2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
2 cups mixed dried fruit (dried cherries and cranberries here)

Preheat the oven to 375. Line a rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil. In a large bowl, combine all the ingredients except the dried fruit. Stir well to incorporate.

Spread the mixture on the prepared baking sheet, spreading it out into an even layer. Bake for 20 to 30 minutes (depending on the depth of golden you’re looking for), stirring every 10 minutes.

Let cool and serve!

Here’s a preview of what Marie will be personally teaching you:

  • The exact formula for marketing high priced products & services – even if you’re just starting out.
  • How to turn your expertise into high value content…and leverage it for maximum impact.
  • The paradox of highly successful women: How to be driven without driving men away. This is a hot topic we’ll be exploring throughout the weekend.
  • The 2 deadly positioning mistakes most women make that drive an otherwise profitable business into the ground.
  • The dangerous pricing “mindset” traps that always lead to failure (and sometimes bankruptcy) that MOST women have hardwired in. (I had a hard time with this…and I’ve never talked about this before!)
  • How to eliminate the “implementation block” so you stop spinning your wheels and start creating results.
  • How chaos gets started in your mind and emotional body and what to do about it.
  • Two major “psychological triggers” your prospects have been subconsciously conditioned to respond to… and how you can use them NOW.
  • If you worry about stuff that’s BEYOND your control to the point where you’re anxious and can’t get ANYTHING done…here’s how to permanently overcome it.
  • How to manage your time, energy and passions daily to get the RIGHT things done without sacrificing your well-being, happiness or relationships.
  • The secrets of authentic and highly persuasive marketing that will help you make more money and make more of a difference then you could ever imagine. (NOTE: I will be taking you through a super secret, uber powerful process that will leave you speechless and your market thinking you’re a mind-reader.)
  • How to write copy that’s so damn irresistible you’ll barely keep from buying your own sh*t!
  • What “filter” you must use to write your marketing messages to guarantee you don’t come across slimy or sales-y.
  • Ever worry that you mistake FEAR for INTUITION? Here’s the science behind it all and how to know whether or not you’re getting an intuitive “hit” or wisely detecting fear.
  • A proprietary process that instantly dissolves fear, builds unshakable confidence and removes blocks so you stay on track and create results. (This physical training experience is so far beyond anything else when it comes to living in the present moment and having the courage to BE you, it’s mind-blowing!)
What are you waiting for? Sign up now. It's gonna be so much fun!! CLICK HERE to join us for this extraordinary event.

Relax & Renew: Leg Drain Pose

Leg drain- Viparita Karani Here is the great mother of all restorative yoga postures. It combines the benefits of corpse pose (savasana) with the gifts of a gentle inversion. This posture promotes rest. It will help drain any blood or lymph that has pooled in your legs, ankles, and feet, and gently lengthens the hamstrings. The floor provides a valuable feedback loop allowing the spine to lengthen and stretch with maximum support. The sacrum is flattened to complete a graceful full-spinal extension while the lungs are freed to empty and fill with ease, which is especially important when you are getting further along in pregnancy. Folded blankets may be used beneath the sacrum or under the length of the spine to provide support and enhance a deeper union with the breath.

How to do it: Bring your hips flush with the wall, lie on your left side, send your right leg up the wall and rolling onto your back, slide the left leg up to meet the right. Your hips can be flush with the wall at 90 degrees or slightly away creating a 45 degree angle with the legs. Close your eyes and relax your shoulders, and breathe deeply. Stay here for a minimum of 5 minutes. If you hang out here for 20 minutes, its equivalent to taking a two hour nap! * You are welcome to practice this pose up until 36 weeks, after that point it is advised not to enter this pose because of the pressure that might be placed on the vena cava*

Spotlight on Christy Turlington's Film- No Woman, No Cry

I formally met Christy Turlington-Burns a few weeks ago at a screening of her beautiful and provocative film- No Woman, No Cry. The film really took a serious look at birthing options, outcomes, and the lives of women around the world giving birth, from the Slums of Bangladesh to the foothills of Tanzania, and even here in the United States. Inspired by Christy's own experience the film looks at the harsh reality of what can happen if things "go wrong". Christy is a huge maternal rights advocate and humanitarian. I admire her work, her commitment, and look forward to hosting a screening of No Woman, No Cry in the near future. Congrats to Christy on her directorial debut. To learn more about Christy's work and her film visit her at: Every Mother Counts To take action visit: Mothers Everyday Campaign

Below is a personal statement from Christy Turlington about her must-see documentary.

"Like many women, I was excited to become a mother and enjoyed being pregnant. But just after delivering my first child, I suffered a serious complication. While I had a birth team that worked quickly to manage the situation, I was shocked to learn that more than 500,000 women die each year during childbirth—and that 90 percent of these deaths are preventable. This left me needing to learn more about maternal health.

I have since become the Maternal Health Advocate for the Cooperative for Assistance and Relief Everywhere (CARE) and enrolled in the Masters of Public Health program at Columbia University's Mailman School. But I still felt helpless, frustrated by the reports that maternal mortality numbers were not dropping. I was inspired to make a documentary film that would share the stories of women at risk of becoming a mortality statistic. I hope that by bringing people together through the universal experience of birth, we can help create a mainstream maternal health movement that ensures the lives and well-being of mothers worldwide, for generations to come."

And now, the trailer for No Woman, No Cry.

Shine on Sierra Leone- BirthRight Healthcare Program

I had the honor of helping my good friend Leilani (whom is a fellow doula and birth keeper) with a fundraiser recently for Shine on Sierra Leone- a beautiful non-profit organization helping improve birthing outcomes for women in Sierra Leone. SOSL held a fabulous and intimate fundraiser at Russel Simmons' home to raise money to help further the mission of the BirthRight Healthcare Program and establish a new prenatal wellness center. Just some basics so you know what is going on over there in terms of maternity care:
    • 1 out of 6 infants die before the age of 1
    • 1 out of 8 mothers die at childbirth

FoodFight is a nonprofit combating childhood obesity in public high schools. I’m honored to serve on the Board of Directors. As many of us know, childhood obesity has become a national epidemic. It it is especially rampant among minorities and lower income groups. FoodFight’s goal is simple but audacious: We plan to revolutionize the way kids think about food and its role in their lives. Focusing on issues of food politics, media literacy and critical consumership, we want to educate a new generation of students who recognize and use their power as consumers to make healthier eating and buying choices. 254 Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn 11215
$65.00 per couple, early registration (by March 1st) $60.00 per couple
This workshop provides an opportunity for couples together to enhance awareness and confidence in pregnancy, labor and birth. We will explore functional yoga tools: gentle postures, breathwork, vocal toning, meditation, visualization, affirmation, and basic massage techniques. Couples will cultivate greater relaxation, intimacy, understanding and preparation for childbearing. A sense of calm eases the birthing process, reducing pain, and increases the joy of giving birth. We will explore how to keep the expectant mother calm and confident during labor. Couples will practice giving and receiving in a supportive partner yoga practice that is beneficial for cultivating connection, and harmony throughout pregnancy and during labor. The presence, participation and support of a woman’s partner are a powerful aid to labor and delivery.

Anti-gravity yoga:Turn Your World Upside Down

Everyone needs a day where they can hang like a monkey and we do just that at Om Factory in our Anti-gravity yoga classes. Anti-gravity is a suspension training technique that was developed by gymnasts, dancers, and aerialists. We spend a lot of time upside down, decompressing the spine, lubricating the joints, lengthening the connective tissue, and elongating the muscles. Going upside down activates the parasympathetic nervous system creating a relaxation response, releasing endorphins into the blood stream and creating a sense of peace and calm.

Join me for Anti-gravity yoga at Om Factory- Monday's 2-3:15pm.
